Halloween Driving Safety Tips

Columbia, SC - Help protect trick-or-treaters by following these driving safety tips on Halloween, or on the night your community hosts Halloween activities. Be especially careful between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Drive slowly, and use caution when passing stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.

Limit your distractions by waiting until you've stopped to call, text, or search the web.

Watch for children darting into the street. We recommend that you cross at an intersection instead of darting back and forth across the street.
Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals. And if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up your kids, turn on your hazard lights.

Brighten them up. Give them flashlights and glow sticks, and/or use reflective tape on their costumes, so drivers can see them. By wearing something reflective, it allows you to be seen as far as 500 feet away.

Adults
If you plan on drinking, make sure to have a designated driver and know who that person is before you head out to the party.
Wait until you get to your destination before putting on your mask. This can limit your peripheral vision when driving and you may not be able to see the entire roadway.

Golf carts are not allowed on roadways after dark.
