Vehicle and Pedestrian Safety Tips

Further information has been revealed on a fatal accident that took the life of a woman last night. The accident took place on McCarran Blvd, near Prater Way, just before ten o'clock.

Nevada Highway Patrol say Jesus Lemus was driving a Ford Mustang, when he hit and killed 62-year-old Maria Rivera-Depineda. Rivera-Depineda was not using a crosswalk at the time she was hit and neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in last night's tragic accident.

Trooper Dave Gibson says there have been a total of five fatal auto-pedestrian accidents in Washoe County this year. He gave some tips that pedestrians and drivers can take, to help prevent future auto-pedestrian accidents.

·         Cross in a crosswalk. Drivers are less likely to see someone walking outside of a crosswalk, especially at night.

·         Don't assume the vehicles will stop. Wait until there is a sufficient amount of time to cross.

·         Wear clothes that are more visible to drivers when it's dark.

·         Drivers should pay attention to all surroundings, and slow-down in areas with crosswalks.

     Further investigations are still underway.
