Angry driver shoots Georgia woman in the back because she was driving too slow

Georgia woman and her son were driving Monday afternoon when another driver pulled up very close behind her in the center lane.

The woman, 44-year-old Angelina Christiano, motioned for the Ford Mustang driver who had been tailing her to pull around her Corvette — but instead he pulled alongside her and opened fire, reported WSB-TV.

Christiano was shot in the upper back and lost control of her car on Stone Mountain Freeway in DeKalb County, but her 25-year-old son was not injured.

She was hospitalized and listed in serious to critical condition.

The gunman fled the area and remains at large.

No witnesses have reported information about the gunman’s license plate, but police are hoping other drivers may have seen which exit the gunman took as he fled in his black Mustang.

HC stays govt order on pvt driving schools

NEW DELHI: A quixotic rule meant to check connivance of Delhi's transport department officials with private driving schools has backfired on the Delhi government, with the high court staying it.

Justice Manmohan in a recent order said the rule that relatives of transport department officials can't operate such schools is "prima facie against the Constitution of India" and made it clear to the government that it can't insist on this condition before granting licence to the schools.

"In every civilized society, there is a presumption of innocence of every individual till proven guilty. If such a condition imposed by the Delhi government is accepted, then tomorrow a condition could be imposed that family members of transport department employees shall not be granted a driving licence as there is a possibility that it may have been procured through influence," the court noted.

HC's orders came on a batch of petitions filed by All India Motor Driving Training School Association and few individuals, challenging the new guidelines issued in August and September for grant of fresh licence and/ or renewal of licence for driving schools. The revised norms govern issuance of motor training school licences.

The operators argued that the condition that no individual applicant or member of society or director of a company should be a family member, or immediate sibling of any current employee of government's transport department, violates right to equality and freedom to work.

During the course of hearing, HC was informed by the petitioners that there are only fifty licensed Motor Driving Training Schools. It pointed out "if such a condition is upheld, it may lead to closure of quite a few of them."

The court granted further relief to the operators by reducing the insistence of solvency certificate of Rs.10 lacs to Rs 3 lacs on the ground that the upper figure "seems to be unduly harsh and excessive."

When drivers call customer from their Ola device, they will not see the customer’s mobile number, though the call will be connected. With this, driver-partners will not bear the cost of calls made to customers, as they would be routed directly through the device. The company said this was a first-of-its-kind feature in the sector, aimed at ensuring complete privacy of a user’s contact details.

The feature comes in the wake of Ola accidentally leaking phone numbers and addresses of customers to a person based in Chennai last month. Subsequently, the company plugged the bug in its software programme, after the person put out a public notice on Facebook with screen grabs of the correspondence.

“Millions of customers use the Ola app as their preferred choice to access a wide range of personal transportation options every day. As a technology platform, we are committed to bringing scalable and sustainable programmes to ensure user safety and security are always above everything else,” said Pranay Jivrajka, chief operating officer, Ola. “The number-masking feature brings enhanced privacy for users, reducing the risk of any untoward experience for them. While driver-partners can save on calling costs, we will be able to monitor driver behaviour and conversations, resulting in a superior experience for users.”

All driver-partners on the Ola platform are verified and licensed by local authorities. They had to mandatorily undergo training during on-boarding and subsequent feedback-driven training from time to time, the firm said.

Ola has about 250,000 cabs and 65,000 auto-rickshaws on its network, across 100 cities.

School bus drivers: Even many veterans make less than $13 an hour

Jane Brown has been driving school buses in Palm Beach County for eight years, but you wouldn’t know it from her paycheck. Her hourly wage is $12.85, just 48 cents more per hour than new drivers make.

Her schedule of morning and afternoon pickups makes it difficult to find a second job. And the county’s bus compounds, where she often passes time between runs, were recently criticized by the county’s new schools superintendent as “some of the worst I’ve ever seen.”

Brown says she is “trying day by day” to make the job work for her. But the schedule and the pay make it difficult, she says.

“You have men who are head of the home,” she said. “You have women who are head of the home also. It really needs to be improved.”

The county’s bus drivers have long argued that their wages are too low and their work conditions poor. But their concerns are getting more attention this year after classes began with a weeks-long school bus meltdown blamed in part on a driver shortage.

The county’s public schools started classes with about 50 fewer drivers than needed to run their routes. The shortages, combined with a botched redesign of the routes, meant huge delays for some students as many drivers were forced to double up. In the chaos, some routes were neglected entirely.

Hard to recruit drivers

Superintendent Robert Avossa has blamed low pay, shabby working conditions and poor management for the perennial driver shortages. As the school system struggles to improve bus service, he has called for a re-examination of drivers’ wages.

“We’re having a harder and harder time finding people to work for $12 an hour, given that the economy is improving and there are other options for people,” Avossa said earlier this month. “So I think we’re probably falling behind a little bit in that area.”

The starting wage for the county’s school bus drivers is $12.37 an hour. That’s more than new drivers make in Miami-Dade County and on par with Broward County, but it’s well below what they make on the Treasure Coast. It’s also $1.30 less per hour than new drivers earn at the county’s Palm Tran bus service.

District and union officials say that wage disparity prompts drivers to leave for higher paying jobs and makes it harder to recruit new ones. And the pay level condemns many long-time drivers to subsistence at or near the poverty level.

A handful of veteran drivers earn nearly $21 an hour, but most earn less than $13. The drivers’ median wage this year is $12.85 per hour, a Palm Beach Post analysis of school district salary data shows.

Less than $20,000 a year

Union officials point out that wages on that level can mean a life of poverty for drivers who are raising a family on a bus driver salary alone. Most drivers work 37.5 hours a week during the school year and earn less than $20,000 a year, a household income that puts a family of three below the federal poverty line. (Unlike many low-wage workers, school bus drivers receive health insurance and earn retirement pensions).

“The big problem here is how do we bring these workers up to a point where they have a living wage?” said Rick Smith, state chief of staff for the Service Employees International Union, which represents the school district’s bus drivers. “The drivers are kind of the most compelling story at the moment because of the churn.”

Drivers can be difficult to recruit because they need to have a commercial driver’s license and pass a physical exam. The school district now covers the costs of driver training, but the requirements nonetheless limit the candidate pool.

“It’s a challenge for us,” said Mark Mitchell, the school district’s director of compensation and employee information services. “Our goal is to be able to attract and retain quality employees. There’s typically more turnover the lower the wages of a job.”

In addition to stiff qualifications, many drivers say their split shifts lead to extraordinarily long days, a further disincentive to stay.

‘We give our life to this job’

With about 3 1/2 hours of free time between their morning and afternoon runs, many drivers say it doesn’t make financial sense for them to burn gas money driving home. Instead, many pass the time in the bus compounds’ aging break areas.

“We give our life to this job,” said Jacquy Prime, a driver for six years, who says he sometimes naps on benches between shifts at one of the compounds.

Lionel Simeus, a driver for nearly two decades, commutes from Port St. Lucie, so he says he spends his break in the compound eating a bag lunch and talking on his cell phone. Others play dominoes or watch TV.

After visiting compounds and speaking with drivers, Avossa this month singled out their conditions as a needed fix. The indoor break rooms are too small to fit all drivers comfortably, so many sit outside in the pavilions, even in the heat and rain.

“In my 20 years of experience in public education, our transportation compounds are some of the worst I’ve ever seen,” Avossa said. “They lack restrooms, adequate space for drivers that are air-conditioned or heated during the winter months. It is not fair and we wonder why we cannot attract and retain top talent.”

The split shifts don’t just mean a lot of time stuck at bus compounds; they also make it difficult for drivers to find second jobs.

Muriel Pickett, a driver for 15 years, used to work two-hour stints as a nurse’s aide between her shifts. But she lost that job recently and has had trouble finding another one that fits her narrow 3 1/2-hour window.

Union officials and the school district will begin negotiating a new contract next month, and a reexamination of drivers’ pay is sure to be one of the discussions.

District officials say they don’t believe compound upgrades and wage increases are the only way to attract and keep more drivers, though.

Avossa has talked about the value of creating new training opportunities for drivers who want to move on to higher-paying positions within the school system, such as mechanics. He said he set up a similar program in Georgia.

“It allowed a driver to see a future,” he said. “To keep them there, we invested in them.”

Brown, the eight-year driver, said that the recent school bus problems have called more attention to the sorts of institutional flaws that drivers have complained about for years. The result, she said, may be a better understanding of her job’s challenges.

“More eyes are opening up,” she said.

I taught her to drive.

To make matters worse, you can't even let on how scared you are (I was reminded during one driving lesson that it's really important not to gasp; it makes them morelikely to swerve and do other dumb stuff). All you can do is hold on really hard to the arm rest (for emotional support), try not to let them see your foot pressing on the passenger brake you wish you had... and pray.
And it was in one of those prayerful moments that I realized that driving lessons are really the perfect metaphor for parenthood. Just like driving lessons, parenthood is terrifying. You aren't in control. You have to do all sorts of things that make you afraid. You need to let your kids try things (at some point you have to let them drive somewhere besides the empty parking lot) -- with no guarantee, ever, that something bad won't happen. And yet you need to keep a poker face about it -- even more than that, you need to be calm and encouraging and not panic (no matter how much you want to vomit).
It amazes me that we parents survive parenthood in general. Especially driving lessons.
But it was also clear to me in that moment of gripping the arm rest that my daughter was terrified too -- and doing her best not to show it. Because life is scary when you are behind the wheel for the first time -- or going to kindergarten or high school, or getting on the blocks for your first swim meet, standing up in front of the class, trying to make friends or going on your first date.
Life is intrinsically terrifying. We don't like to think about it, because it makes getting up in the morning hard when we do, but it's true. Every day is an act of bravery and optimism.
That's ultimately how I saw driving lessons, especially after she passed her driving test: an act of bravery and optimism for both of us. She didn't let her fear get in the way of getting her license, and I didn't let my fear get in the way of my love for her.
Which is maybe the hardest and best thing we do as parents. And by being brave, we teach our children to be brave, too.
I am really glad, though, that I have two years before my next child can get her permit. It may take me that long to fully recover.

Schools worry about dangerous drivers

Dangerous driving is threatening the safety of primary school students.

Both Glenfield Primary and Forrest Hill schools have ongoing issues with heavy congestion, speed, and dangerous parking and are asking drivers to be more aware of kids.

For Glenfield Primary, it's a nightmare when cars stop on top of the pedestrian crossing during heavy morning traffic on Chivalry Rd.

Principal Christine Cooper is fed up.

"It boils down to the irresponsibility of the adults driving the cars," she says.

In August, a student was nearly hit by an oncoming vehicle after walking behind a parked car blocking the crossing.

Teachers get abused when they ask drivers not to stop on the crossing, Cooper says. 

Caretaker Trevor Best is a parent at the school and is frustrated when drivers won't stop for students.

"I'd rather step out than the kids," he says. "I feel like throwing eggs at those drivers sometimes."

The school has asked Auckland Transport to raise the crossing and Cooper hopes that will make a difference.
Auckland Transport's Mark Hannan says it is looking into raising the pedestrian crossing and other improvements to safety in the area.

If a decision is made to raise the crossing, construction wouldn't begin until July, providing funding is available, he says. 

At Forrest Hill School, the problem is with parents parking illegally on Forrest Hill Rd and making dangerous U-turns.

Principal John Marwick says they're lucky they haven't had any kids hit by a car.

"I have to tell my teachers on road patrol not to do the police's job of giving drivers warnings.

"Parents don't seem to think there's a problem and they can be quite aggressive. When they're dropping off kids and parking illegally it stops traffic flow."

He says the school works closely with the community constable and records number plates of cars.

Both schools offer Auckland Transport's Travelwise programme, which teaches students about road safety and encourages them to walk to school.

Cooper and Marwick both frequently address the problems in their school newsletters to bring them to parents' attention.

Sergeant David Best from North Shore Police says police regularly patrol school areas with reduced speed zones.

He also says police are concerned about children not wearing seatbelts or in incorrect car seats.

The Hackney Council said it decided not to grant the Beis Malka School Voluntary Aided status due to the amount of money the school requires for new building construction, the Jewish Chronicle reported.
The council said it also rejected the request due to the school’s inadequate teaching of the national curriculum, its inadequate provisions for special educational needs, and “serious concerns about health and safety.” The school’s “compliance with the Equality Act 2010” also was a factor, the Jewish Chronicle reported.
In May, Belz rabbis in London issued a letter saying that female drivers violate “the traditional rules of modesty in our camp” and that children would be expelled from Belz schools if their mothers dropped them off by car beginning in August with the new school year. Many Hasidic groups in the United States also frown upon women driving.
In response to the letter, the Equality and Human Rights Commission wrote to the schools to say that it would be against the law to deny children entry on such grounds, according to the Chronicle.
The commission later said that it has received a “satisfactory response” from the leaders of the Talmud Torah Machzikei Hadass boys school and the Beis Malka girls school over the threat after the schools had offered assurances that “they will not exclude or refuse admission to any child or apply any other sanction on the basis of their mother driving.”
Both schools have been rated “good” by Ofsted, Britain’s Office for Standards in Education.

Gwinnett Rotary, Hebron Baptist thank 1,900 school bus drivers

They came for training and left with chicken sandwiches, but in the meantime were met with a lively atmosphere that was equal parts pep rally and motivational speech.
The nearly 2,000 school bus drivers who work for Gwinnett County Public Schools attended a second annual appreciation event on Monday at Hebron Baptist Church, which was a joint partnership with the Rotary Club of Gwinnett, which donated Chick-fil-A box lunches. And it was the Rotary Club’s President, Marlon Allen, who had the crowd clapping and chanting, and even brought Associate Superintendent Frances Davis out of her chair.
Allen peeled off a suit jacket and dress shirt to reveal a Cincinnati Reds shirt, the team he played in the minor leagues for, to show the drivers that they are the kind of people who make things happen, such as giving a child a coat.
“You are the type of people who welcome 30 kids on a bus that are rowdy, and I know this because my kids ride the bus,” Allen said. “… You say it with a smile, that this will be the best day of our life and be the best day for these kids. You’re not sitting back waiting. You’re not sitting back wondering. You’re not watching things happen, but every single day of the year, you have commitment to make it happen.”
Dave Dewolf, a third-year driver in the Meadowcreek cluster, noted Allen’s and Davis’ enthusiasm and how she “really pepped you up.”
“It gets you motivated, it gets you in the mindset,” Dewolf said. “You say ‘Oh gosh, another meeting,’ but it gets you set and ready for the year. You’re pumped up.”
The drivers heard from a host of district officials including Davis, Transportation Director Grant Reppert and Chief Operations Officer Danny Jardine. But it was Allen’s talk about teamwork, and the people in his life growing up with a love of baseball, that brought the most energy.
Shirley Crear, who is entering her ninth year driving a school bus, this year in the Central Gwinnett and Collins Hill clusters, said she appreciates the welcome back to the training event each year. Crear said through the trophies, gift cards and other incentives, the district and community groups like the Rotary let the drivers know they do a good job.
“That encouragement, we all need encouragement and we need to be recognized,” she said. “That’s what I like. They do recognize us for what we do every day, and that’s very important.”
Hebron associate pastor Duke Forster said the church’s ministry philosophy is to be part of the community, and the partnership with the Rotary Club and Chick-fil-A allows them to recognize a group that is not usually noticed. About 40 church volunteers helped pass out box lunches and drinks after the event.
“These people are the first people on the line, they’re the first people our children see, and our community, our Rotarians are here to say thanks for what they do and they matter,” Davis said of the bus drivers. “Those lives are precious lives that they transport day in and day out and we’ve got the finest teams of drivers. We just want to say thank you for what they do day in, day out.”
Davis said the district needs about 75 additional drivers to serve as backup drivers when others are sick or don’t show. She said the district has enough drivers for the first day of school on Monday. Davis even passed out her own cell phone to encourage referrals from current drivers, who receive a referral bonus similar to employees who refer teachers in critical needs areas.
“I’ve got to give my phone to somebody to get all those texts,” she said with a laugh.
Steve Turner, a bus driver supervisor in the Central Gwinnett cluster, said it was a morale boost for Davis and the other district leaders to speak to the drivers.
“Let them know how important they are to Gwinnett County,” he said. “A lot of people don’t get that appreciation all the time, and they probably see things on the negative side. But whenever we can get them out here, and the Rotary Club, just to say ‘thank you’ is more than enough.”
As the last days of summer give way to the first day and week of school, Turner said the emotions of the bus drivers are a combination of anxiousness and excitement. The main focus now is have a clean, safe day on Monday.
Added Crear, “We want to stay focused. That’s our main goal, is the safety of our children.”
